Since its Early Access release back in 2017, Motion Twin and Evil Empire’s Dead Cells has become one of the most popular roguelikes of the current gaming generation. The two studios may have recently ended development on the game, but it’ll still live on the form of the animated series, Dead Cells: Immortalis.
In the game, players take control of the Prisoner, a one-eyed amorphous blob that can take control of dead bodies as he fights his way off an unnamed island to kill its king. Plot-wise, the show adds some new wrinkles: the Prisoner now goes by the Chosen One (or Flame-Faced Man), and is believed to be the only one capable of slaying an evil king and his malaise that’s spread over the kingdom. With true believer Laure Esposito by his side, the Chosen One will die again and again as he goes about taking down each of the king’s lieutenants—known as the Five Fingers, each of whom have punny little names to keep with the theme.
Immortalis comes courtesy of French studio Bobbypills, which has previously handled the animated trailers for Dead Cells’ various add-ons over the years. As such, the show can’t help but feel like an extended version of those trailers. Still, small but substantial additions like Laure’s presence or the Chosen One being able to talk give it a unqiue energy, even when it’s pulling from the game by having the him get murdered (and then hop into another dead guy’s body) or turning the frying pan into his most deadly weapon.
Dead Cells: Immortalis will premiere in France on June 19. At time of writing, it’s unknown when (or if) a streamer will pick up the show for a wider international release.
